I am Thijs, founder of VANN. I guide the brand and work daily on the development of reusable products that people actually use in their daily lives.
1. Can you briefly tell us about the history of your company? And how big is your organisation?

VANN was born out of one clear conviction: everyday life can be more conscious, more sustainable and more beautiful. What started with a single bottle as an alternative to disposable products has grown into a fully-fledged brand with a wide range of high-quality products. Today, we reach tens of thousands of customers in the Netherlands, Germany and beyond.

Our team is compact and agile: in addition to my business partner and me, we have three full-time employees. We also have long-term collaborations with reliable partners and a growing network of dozens of social media creators who help spread our mission.

2. What are you doing to reduce the global plastic footprint? And since when?

Since our start in 2020, we have focused on developing products that last a long time and thus contribute to less waste. We work together with the Plastic Soup Foundation, which increases our joint impact.

A great milestone in this collaboration is the launch of a 100% plastic-free children's bottle – a product that shows how conscious choices and collaboration can bring about real change.

3. Why do you think it's important to work on this?

Single-use plastic is one of the biggest polluters of our time. I believe that everyone can make choices every day that make a difference, and a reusable bottle is a concrete example of this. It's not just about reducing plastic, but about a more conscious way of living that is more in balance with the world around us.

4. What do you like most about sustainable entrepreneurship?

That our work is part of a larger movement. Every bottle that comes into use means less disposable plastic in circulation. It's inspiring to see that the small, everyday choices of tens of thousands of people can make a big difference together.

5. What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs who want to become more sustainable?

Start small and stay consistent. Sustainability doesn't have to be perfect right away. Look at the impact you can already make within your company and build on that.

6. What do you personally do to reduce your plastic footprint?

I use my own VANN bottles every day – at home, on the go and at the office. I also share the story of VANN and try to inspire others to make more conscious choices in their daily lives.

7. What sustainability tip do you often give to people around you?

Invest in products that last a long time. Cheap may seem attractive, but quality means less waste and more enjoyment.

8. How do you see the future in this area?

We believe that disposable plastic will increasingly become a thing of the past. Legislation, awareness and better alternatives will ensure that reuse becomes the norm.

9. How do you see the balance between CO2 reduction and attention to plastic pollution?

Both are important and often interrelated. Less plastic production also means less CO2 emissions. It's about looking at the whole picture and not just isolating one problem.

10. What do you think is the biggest misconception about sustainability?

That it is more expensive or more complicated. Often, a sustainable choice actually provides convenience, quality and long-term savings.

11. What do people really need to know about plastic pollution?

That it ends up everywhere: in nature, in the sea, but also in our bodies via microplastics. So it is not only an environmental problem, but also a health problem.

12. Where do you see yourself and VANN in 5 to 10 years in terms of sustainability and plastic footprint?

I see VANN as an international brand that helps even more people make conscious choices. With a wide range of reusable products, more partnerships and an even greater impact.
