Halloween: spooky, fun and plastic-free
More and more people are celebrating Halloween. An evening full of spooky houses, pumpkins and trick-or-treating. October is the perfect time for creative people to go all out decorating their homes. And as the days grow shorter, it only adds to the cozy atmosphere.
In this blog we share sustainable Halloween tips to help you reduce plastic waste. Just as spooky, without plastic!
Pumpkins
Pumpkins inside and around your home create that perfect autumn feeling. Carve a scary face and they’ll fit right in with your Halloween decor! Across the Netherlands you’ll find pumpkin farms where you can pick the best ones.
A quick Google search: Pumpkinfarm near [city] and you’ll know where to go. Extra tip: use the inside of your pumpkin for a delicious soup or roast dish. That way, your decoration becomes zero waste!
Ghosts
Ghosts are a Halloween essential. Instead of plastic sheets, use a cotton bed sheet with paper eyes for the perfect spooky look. It’s sustainable, reusable, and gives your decorations an authentic vintage vibe. A real win-win situation!

Paper shadows
Cut silhouettes from black cardboard and place them in your window. Turn on a light in the evening and it will look like a shadowy figure is standing inside.
Use leftover cardboard to make bats, hang them from the ceiling, and you’ve got yourself an easy DIY Halloween decoration. Fun, creative and completely plastic-free.
Spider webs
Many store-bought spider webs are made of polyester, which is plastic. Instead, buy a ball of wool (white or black) and make your own spider webs, as large or small as you like. Hang them outside or inside your home for a plastic-free Halloween interior that looks even better!
A little plastic? Try second-hand
Sometimes you may want to buy decorations that do contain plastic. If so, check out your local thrift store or online marketplace first. So many Halloween decorations already exist; chances are you’ll find a great second-hand treasure. Reuse is always the most sustainable choice.
