From scientific breakthroughs to global media attention and political impact. 2024 was a year of progress. Discover how we pushed the plastic agenda forward.
We showed how microplastics can reach the brain via the nose. This research gained global media attention — and public awareness reaching 3.2 billion people. The message was picked up by leading media outlets such as The Guardian, Times, CNN and several major European titles.
Plastic Soup Foundation sat at the negotiating table, bringing the voice of science into the room. As a result, health became part of the global plastic agenda. We were present at Rounds 4 and 5 of the Global Plastic Treaty in Ottawa and Busan.
In our ‘Scientists Speak Out’ series, Prof. Lukas Kenner calls for action. His research on plastic and cancer made global headlines. The press release had a potential reach of 1.3 billion. We are delighted that this important research has generated so much potential reach and has been featured in Metro, Daily News and AP News among others.
We organized 3 live events with businesses, researchers and activists – sharing insights, building solutions, and sparking action. Together with pioneering leaders and driven by our partners and supporters, we are united in our efforts to tackle the plastic tsunami at its source.
We are proud to announce that our book “This Was Plastic Time” has now been translated into several languages. Several more language versions are planned for 2025!
Plastic Banks Tracker is an initiative of Profundo and BankTrack, in partnership with Plastic Soup Foundation. The tracker reveals the impact of the 20 largest banks on plastic pollution.
Together with Earth Action and a.s.r., we developed a new method to measure how companies contribute to plastic pollution through their investments – and what that means for our health. We analysed 31 companies and took the first step towards smarter finance and better policy.
Maria Westerbos, our founder, appeared several times on NPO Radio1 on the program 'Goed Ingelichte Kring'. Colleague Jeroen Dagevos also returned to NPO Radio 1 (De NieuwsBV) and was featured several times in Trouw, NRC and De Volkskrant, among others.
With great pride we launched our brand new website at the end of 2024! In collaboration with Ninjible we worked hard on a renewed, interactive website. With the launch of the website, the corporate identity has also been renewed. We are proud of the end result.
In 2025, we continue our fight against (micro)plastics. We’re working on the Interest Group in Brussels, launching the new UseLess Plastic app, hosting the second One Planetary Health Symposium, and taking part in the Global Plastic Treaty negotiations. We’re also expanding our fast fashion campaigns, the Plastic Diet, and the Plastictarian movement.
