Fast fashion fuels plastic pollution

Cheap plastic throwaway fashion is flooding our society. These materials shed microplastics that harm our health. New legislation could stop this but industry lobbying threatens to weaken the law. Fast Plastic Fashion remains a growing problem.

Help us put pressure on policymakers to make the law truly work.

What Does the Science Say?

Our report “Do clothes make us sick?” highlights growing scientific concern about the health risks of microplastics. The textile industry is responsible for 35% of oceanic microplastic pollution.

Legislation is the solution

Microplastic fibres from clothing pollute our oceans — and our bodies. Only strong laws can stop this. We need rules on materials, tougher quality standards to prevent fibre loss during wear, and mandatory filters in washing machines. Stop the greenwashing — start real change.

Plastic is hiding in your closet

Most of our clothes today are made from synthetic fibres like polyester, nylon, and acrylic. Every wear and wash releases microplastics—tiny plastic particles that pollute not just the planet, but also our bodies. Want to make better choices?

Do clothes make us sick?

When inhaled, microfibers can reach the lungs and cause chronic inflammation — increasing the risk of cancer, asthma, heart disease, and diabetes. These fibers have also been found in the liver, kidneys, brain, and even in unborn babies. We ingest microplastics through food and drinks, which can trigger gut issues like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Effect on Children

Children under 6 months of age inhale twice the amount of plastic fibres and ingest twelve times more than adults because they often bring their hands to their mouths and spend time on the floor. Microfibres can be especially harmful during the early development of a child.
In March 2022, the European Commission announced its ambition to make the textile industry significantly more sustainable by around 2030. The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) entered into force on 18 July 2024, forming the cornerstone of the Commission’s approach. The ESPR is part of a broader package of measures that are key to achieving the goals of the 2020 Circular Economy Action Plan, and to driving the transition towards a circular, sustainable, and competitive economy.

Stop Plastic Pollution at the Source

Maria Westerbos, founder of Plastic Soup Foundation: “It should be illegal to sell clothes that wear out so quickly and shed so many fibers they resemble the Emperor’s New Clothes after just five washes. It’s time we see Fast Fashion for what it truly is: a profit model for the oil and fashion industries — and a threat to our environment and health.”
