Global Plastic Treaty

Time to act.

Protect Future Generations

Plastic pollution harms not just the planet – but also human health. That’s why we’re fighting for a strong Global Plastic Treaty that puts health first.

No treaty after plastic negotiations in Geneva

From Aug. 5 to 14 negotiations for a global plastics treaty took place in Geneva. The goal: to reach agreements that would finally address the plastic crisis. But after 11 days of intense meetings, the countries did not come to an agreement. The night before decision day, the United Nations submitted a proposal, but it was rejected by all countries. For supporters of a strong plastics treaty, the proposal was too weak; for opponents, on the contrary, it was too strict. The result: another delay in the fight against plastic pollution.

Plastic Soup Foundation in Geneva

Our founder, Maria Westerbos, was present in Geneva on behalf of Plastic Soup Foundation while negotiations were underway. Together with A Plastic Planet, she organized a successful side event focusing on the consequences of the plastic problem. Scientists shared new insights and renowned researcher Prof. Dr. Shanna Swan gave interviews on the impact of plastic on our health.

"The side event was very well received. In particular, Scientists Speak Out 3 with Professor Shanna Swan evoked emotion. Her plea for a world without plastic and chemicals convinced all attendees.
Professor Lukas Kenner was also met with acclaim with his intervention to put 150 cancer patients on a plastic diet."

Support us and help towards a plastic free future

"Although we did not reach an agreement, I am hopeful for the future. We did not accept a weak agreement. More than 120 countries support a strong plastics treaty. Without a Global Plastic Treaty, we will continue to fight for stricter laws and regulations around the production of new plastic. Because (micro)plastic is a threat to humans, animals and nature."

Robbert Meulenveld, director Plastic Soup Foundation

Plastic Soup Foundation continues to work against plastic pollution. We eat, drink and breathe plastic every day. Research shows that humans and animals get sick from plastic. Plastic particles have even been found in unborn babies. Without a strong plastic treaty, this does not change. This must stop - for this generation and all generations to come.

World leaders, act now

World leaders, act now

World leaders have a unique opportunity: tackle plastic pollution at its source – globally.
A strong Global Plastic Treaty must protect our health and the environment by cutting plastic production drastically.

We’ve done it before. When the ozone layer was under threat, when acid rain and toxic pesticides endangered lives, bold action made the difference. Now, we need another turning point. This is the moment to eliminate harmful single-use plastics and dangerous chemicals once and for all.

It starts at the source: close the plastic tap!

Science Speaks Out

Micro- and nanoplastics have been found in our organs and brains. They may cause inflammation, disrupt hormones and weaken the immune system. In our Scientists Speak Out series, leading researchers like Prof. Dr.Thais Mauad and Prof. Dr. Lukas Kenner raise the alarm.

Driving Systemic Change

Plastic Soup Foundation is pushing to put health on the UN Plastic Treaty agenda. We do this together with A Plastic Planet (UK), with whom we co-founded the Plastic Health Council, During the UN Treaty negotiations, we co-hosted events under this banner. We also work alongside Earth Action, Greenpeace, scientists, educators, and citizens worldwide. Our strength lies in connecting science, policy, and people — and we do it with you.
